Best Coffee Shops in Maine 2026: Top Roasters & Cafes

Maine’s coffee is concentrated in Portland, where four roasters run cafes within a couple of miles of each other, but there is good coffee on Deer Isle, in Rockland, in Wiscasset and out in the western mountains too. Everything below was checked against the shop’s own website in September 2026. Addresses and hours are quoted from those pages.

The single most useful thing to know: Maine coffee shops close early. Both Tandem cafes shut at 1pm. Speckled Ax shuts at 2pm or 3pm depending on the shop. An afternoon coffee plan needs to aim at Bard or Coffee By Design, or it will not happen.

Portland

Tandem Coffee Roasters

Cafe + Roastery: 122 Anderson Street, East Bayside. Monday through Saturday, 7am to 1pm. Closed Sunday. Coffee + Bakery: 742 Congress Street. Open seven days a week, 8am to 1pm. Phone: (207) 760-4440 for both.

Tandem roasts its own coffee and runs a bakery at the Congress Street shop. Note the 1pm close at both locations, which catches out a lot of visitors. The roastery keeps its own schedule and occasionally closes on holidays when the cafes stay open.

Speckled Ax Wood Coffee Roasters

Downtown: 567 Congress Street. Open every day, 8am to 3pm. Coffee, espresso and local pastry. Waterfront: 18 Thames Street. Open every day, 7am to 2pm. Seasonal patio. Back Cove / Roastery: 135 Walton Street. Open every day, 7am to 2pm. Takeaway only, no seating. Phone: 207-660-3333.

Speckled Ax roasts on a vintage Italian Petroncini fired with local hardwood, with a firebox under a brick-lined steel drum instead of gas jets. They light it with matches and kindling on roast days. A roast takes about thirteen minutes, and the shop is at pains to say this is nothing like smoking meat, so the wood does not make the coffee taste like barbecue.

If you want to sit down, go to Congress Street or Thames Street. Walton Street is a counter.

Coffee By Design

1 Diamond Street. Open daily, 7am to 6pm. 207-874-5400.

Portland’s original specialty roaster, opened downtown in 1994 when Congress Street had a 40% storefront vacancy rate. They pull every shot by hand rather than on automatic machines. This is now their only coffeehouse, so ignore older guides that send you to India Street or Congress Street. Casco Bay Blend and Rebel Blend are both still in the lineup, and the Rebel Blend Fund puts money back into local causes.

The 6pm close makes this the most forgiving option for an afternoon coffee.

Bard Coffee

185 Middle Street, in the Old Port. Monday through Saturday, 7am to 5pm. Sunday, 8am to 5pm.

One shop, not two. Some guides list “Bard Old Port” and “Bard Middle Street” as separate cafes; they are the same address. Open seven days and the only one of Portland’s roaster cafes that reliably runs past mid-afternoon.

Southern Maine

Mornings in Paris

Kennebunk: 21 Western Avenue, Kennebunk 04043. (207) 204-0032. Falmouth: 240 US Route 1. Ogunquit: 246 Main Street. Open since May 2021.

Cafe hours are daily 7am to 5pm at all three. Crepes run on a shorter window: 8am to 2pm in Kennebunk, 7am to 4pm in Falmouth, 9am to 2pm in Ogunquit. The company says all three are open 365 days a year, which is unusual in coastal Maine and worth knowing in February.

Midcoast

Rock City Coffee, Rockland

Cafe: 316 Main Street, downtown Rockland. Open every day, 7am to 5pm.

A worker-owned cooperative that has been roasting since 1999. The cafe does quick-service breakfast and lunch alongside a full espresso bar, and shares its building with Hello Hello Books, which makes it an easy hour.

One correction worth carrying: the roasting no longer happens at the cafe. Rock City has outgrown its old 252 Main Street roastery and moved production to 16 Rockport Park Center in Rockport, which is closed to the public. Buy the beans in Rockland; there is nothing to tour in Rockport.

Treats, Wiscasset

80 Main Street. Cafe Tuesday through Sunday, 7:30am to 3pm. Closed Monday. Wine bar Thursday through Saturday, 3pm to 9pm.

Coffee, tea and pastries baked fresh in house in the morning, wine in the evening. It sits on Route 1 in the middle of Wiscasset, which makes it a natural stop on a Midcoast drive. Check the day of the week before you plan around it.

Downeast and Acadia

44 North Coffee, Deer Isle and Stonington

Deer Isle cafe: 7 Main Street, Deer Isle. Year-round. Monday to Friday 7am to 3pm, Saturday 8am to 2pm. Closed Sunday. Stonington cafe: 70 Main Street, Stonington. Seasonal. Monday to Saturday 6:30am to 5pm, Sunday 8am to 2pm. Roastery: 56 Church Street, Deer Isle, Monday to Thursday 8am to 3pm.

Founded in 2010, roasting organic arabica on the island. They buy through Coop Coffees, a green-coffee importing cooperative built around direct relationships with small farms. The Stonington shop keeps the longer hours but only in season, so out of season the Deer Isle cafe is the one that is open, and it is closed Sundays.

Acadia Coffee Company, Bar Harbor

121 Cottage Street, Bar Harbor. (207) 801-8081.

A Bar Harbor roaster with an online shop, subscriptions and a wholesale side. Their blends include Coastal Bloom, First Light, Nor’easter and Snowbird. They publish no cafe hours on their site, so treat this as a place to buy beans rather than a cafe you can count on being open at 6am before a hike. Call ahead.

Watch the name. A separate business called Acadia Coffee House, at 2 Loren Street in Bar Harbor, currently states on its own homepage that it will not be open this season because of a staffing shortage, and directs customers to its sister cafe, Choco-Latte. Two similar names, two different addresses, and only one of them is trading.

Western Mountains

The Orange Cat Cafe, Farmington

147 Pleasant Street, Farmington 04938. 207.778.0552. Tuesday to Saturday “9ish to 5ish”, Sunday and Monday “10ish to 3ish”, which is how they write it themselves.

Breakfast, lunch, bakery and coffee, with inside and outside seating. They pour Carrabassett Coffee and espresso, make their own chai and hot chocolate, and do a full range of espresso drinks. Note that the cafe has moved; older listings put it in Kingfield or, wrongly, in Fryeburg. Farmington is the address now.

Carrabassett Coffee Company, Kingfield

93 Main Street, Kingfield 04947. Monday to Friday 8am to 4:30pm, Saturday 8am to 2pm. Closed Sunday. (207) 265-2326.

The roaster behind a lot of the coffee served in the Sugarloaf area. They sell online, wholesale, and by local pickup in Kingfield, but they do not publish a cafe menu, so go expecting a roastery counter rather than a sit-down espresso bar. The house blend is called Carrabassett Classic, described as a mild blend of Central Americans, sold by the pound and the five-pound bag. They also roast a blend called Acadia and one called Sparky’s Blend, which sends a share of proceeds to local charities.

Roasters You Can Buy From, Not Visit

Two well-known Maine names are roasteries rather than cafes. Both are frequently listed as places to drop in, and neither is.

• Wicked Joe, Topsham. 35 Canam Drive. Family owned, founded in 2003 by Carmen and Bob Garver, certified organic. The company is reachable 8am to 5pm Monday to Thursday, but its website advertises no cafe, no retail hours and no facility tours. Buy online or find their bags in Maine shops.
• Rock City’s Rockport roastery. 16 Rockport Park Center. Explicitly closed to the public. The Rockland cafe is the visitable half of the business.

What to Know Before You Go

Check the closing time, not the opening time. Portland’s specialty cafes are morning businesses. Tandem closes at 1pm, Speckled Ax at 2pm or 3pm, Bard and Coffee By Design at 5pm and 6pm. That pattern holds outside Portland too: Treats closes at 3pm, the Deer Isle 44 North at 3pm, Carrabassett at 4:30pm.

Check the day. Treats is closed Mondays. Tandem’s Anderson Street cafe and 44 North’s Deer Isle cafe are closed Sundays. Carrabassett is closed Sundays.

Seasonal shops are seasonal. 44 North’s Stonington cafe runs in season only, and Speckled Ax’s Thames Street patio is seasonal. Downeast, a summer listing is not a guarantee for October.

Buying beans is the reliable move. Every roaster here sells retail bags, and several ship. If your timing is bad or the cafe is closed, the beans are still there.

• Before Acadia: buy beans at Acadia Coffee Company on Cottage Street in Bar Harbor, but do not count on a cafe being open at dawn.

• Route 1 through the Midcoast: Treats in Wiscasset, closed Mondays.
• Rockland and the Farnsworth: Rock City on Main Street, open every day to 5pm.
• Sugarloaf and the western mountains: Carrabassett Coffee in Kingfield for beans, The Orange Cat in Farmington for an actual sit-down cafe.
• Portland on foot: Bard on Middle Street and Coffee By Design on Diamond Street are the two that stay open into the afternoon.

Maine’s coffee scene is real, and it is small enough that the same handful of roasters supply cafes all over the state. The catch is not quality, it is hours. Plan your coffee for the morning and you will drink well anywhere on this list.
