Jefferson sits at the heart of Maine’s lake country, where Damariscotta Lake, one of the cleanest and most beautiful lakes in the state, defines community life. Public access allows swimming and boat launching, and the lake’s islands invite exploration.

Beyond the waterfront, Jefferson maintains its agricultural character. Working farms still dot the landscape, many offering fresh produce at roadside stands during the growing season. The Bunker Hill covered bridge, built in 1901 and rebuilt after being damaged by a logging truck in 2023, remains one of Maine’s few surviving covered bridges and draws photographers year-round.

The town sits conveniently between Augusta and the Midcoast, giving residents access to employment and services while maintaining rural character. Real estate prices remain more affordable than lakefront communities closer to Portland, making Jefferson attractive to families and retirees seeking lake living without coastal prices.

Community life centers on the village and the lake. Summer brings the population surge typical of Maine lake towns, while winter settles into the quieter rhythm of year-round residents. Ice fishing takes over when the lake freezes, and the surrounding forests attract hunters during fall seasons. Jefferson isn’t a tourist destination. It’s a place where people live, connected to the land and water that have sustained this community for over two centuries.
