Skiing & Snowboarding

Maine offers the best skiing in the East, with rugged mountains, reliable snow, and a distinct lack of the “resort” pretense found elsewhere. It’s about the skiing here, not the fur coats.

The Big Three

  • Sugarloaf (Carrabassett Valley): The King. Famous for its snowfields (above treeline), challenging terrain, and vibrant “Loafer” community.
  • Sunday River (Newry): The giant. Known for its massive snowmaking power, eight interconnected peaks, and family-friendly variety.
  • Saddleback (Rangeley): The comeback kid. Recently revitalized, it offers a classic, friendly vibe, affordable independent spirit, and challenging hand-cut glades like Casablanca.

The Independents & Community Hills

Don’t overlook the smaller gems that often feature on the Indy Pass.

  • Camden Snow Bowl: Skiing with an ocean view. Unbeatable.
  • Black Mountain of Maine (Rumford): Incredible value, authentic local culture, and some of the best glades in the state.
  • Lost Valley (Auburn): The place to learn. Great night skiing and a brewpub at the base.
  • Pleasant Mountain (Bridgton): The closest major mountain to Portland.

Nordic & Backcountry

For cross-country skiers, the Fort Kent Outdoor Center (host of World Cups) and the Maine Huts & Trails system offer world-class grooming.
